Handwoven Amish Made Natural Reed Baskets
We do a lot of traveling, and I’ll be the first to admit I’d much rather travel the backroads of Amish Country than the traffic-filled streets of big cities. You would think with all of our travelings I would learn to like crowds, but I don’t. I enjoy the quietness of a backcountry road and pasture filled landscape so much more.
On my recent trip to Shipshewana, Indiana for a book signing, hubby and I snuck away for some sightseeing. There is nothing I love more than stopping at the Amish businesses we come across. I was so excited that we would have time on a Saturday morning to enjoy some freshly baked donuts and out of the way cottage businesses. And while we did find a few, (I’ll tell you all about them in another post) what I was the most excited about was finding Sonshine Baskets in Millersburg.

Tucked deep in Amish Country in Millersburg, we stumbled upon the neatest little shop.
When we pulled up the sign on the door said “CLOSED,” but before we could even get turned around a young woman came out from the house to let us in. What a treat it was she opened just for us. Inside I was treated to a fantastic display of handwoven natural reed baskets in all sizes and shapes.
After explaining to us that their inventory was low because her husband had most of it over at Amish Acres, she proceeded to show us the collection of handmade baskets. She told us it was a family affair and everyone had their own part in making them.

Custom made baskets of any size.
I can’t even begin to show you the quality through a few pictures. I enjoyed picking up each item to look, feel, and appreciate the time and effort that went into each handmade basket. What amazed me the most was they can make any size basket for any use, all you need to do is give them the dimensions. My head was just swimming with ideas on where I could use them in my own home.

Let me know if you enjoy reading about the places we visit.
If so, I will be sure to share more of these great finds. If you find yourself in the Millersburg, IN area and are looking for quality handmade baskets, I encourage you to stop at Sonshine Baskets at 11020 W 400 S, Millersburg, IN 46543 | Phone: 574-642-0599
Here are just a few of the baskets they carry:
Waste Baskets, Napkin Baskets, Tissue Holders, Cake Pan Holders, Large Carry Alls, Large Serving Baskets, Small Sewing Baskets, Square Cake Pan Basket, Picnic Baskets, Storage Baskets, Bakers Baskets, Wine Baskets, Large Round Utility Baskets, and so many more I can’t name them all.
I keep thinking about what great Christmas presents or wedding gifts these would make. They tell me they can ship as well. You don’t have to live in Amish Country to enjoy beautiful things. You just have to have people like me, to tell you where to find them!
Glad you found this neat little basket shop. I’ll have to make sure I go there the next time I’m in that area.
Sure would like a web site so we could purchase baskets on line!!
I know! I wish they did too.
We are going to publish their products online. Working on the website now. Just got back from Shipshewana after attending an Amish Furniture expo where we met a lot of great Amish families like this one. Sonshine baskets are really well made. We found this blog because they mentioned to us that you had written about them!
We are planning to sell a variety of other Amish made products as well. Check every few weeks to see when our site goes live. http://www.Simonpureamish.com. Hopefully it will be up between now and the end of July 2020.
How sweet. I loved their baskets and purchased a few of them. I am happy she remembered I wrote a post about them. Good luck with your new venture.
The best! ❤️
This is always one of stops on our annual camping trip to Shipshewana. Can’t express how happy I am with the quality of their baskets and how polite the whole family is. I would highly recommend their products to anybody and make sure this is one of your stops.
