  • 2 cups flour
  • 2 cups brown sugar
  • 1 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 2 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup chopped walnuts or pecans


  • Combine flour, brown sugar, baking powder, salt, and cinnamon in a large bowl. Cut in butter until it resembles coarse crumbs. Reserve 1 cup for topping.
    Mix buttermilk and baking soda and then add egg and mix. Pour buttermilk mixture into the flour mixture and mix well. Pour batter into a greased 9x13 pan and sprinkle with reserved crumbs and chopped nuts.
    Bake in a preheated oven at 375° for 20 minutes.
